YOLO; hello, goodbye… Life is short; we live, we die. There is nothing more than death and taxes; the results of our toil being ulcers and caskets. Seriously? What a life to lead… But is that life; to simply satisfy our simple needs? Maybe we are being sold a lie: you only live once. Let’s focus on that word; live.
It is easy to look at some people and say they aren’t living. Why? Just because they’re in prison? Hey, they lived, laughed, and did what they wanted. Of course, they got caught, and those they harmed are left dead or haunted… But that’s what comes from a “life” in pursuit of selfish pleasure and blind desire, seeking moth-eaten and rust-encrusted treasures that ultimately perish in fire. In truth, most people know that life is not life when in pursuit of death, but only some people know that true life is breath used as it was first intended, to glorify God, the One who gave breath and even now sustains it.
Eternity; hello, see you later… Though flesh perishes, this soul lives forever. I decide my eternity today, whether in Heaven by God’s grace, or in Hell to waste away. So, it’s time to ask yourself; “What is my eternal resting place? Will I close my eyes and rise to Heaven’s light or will I fight to stay alive, only to be dragged into fire and eternal night?” Only you can answer that question, but if YOLO is your motto, then I can say you haven’t answered it yet. Death is a sorry reality, but life after death is the truth the world tried to bury. But what life will come after death? That’s the question. There are two roads that can be taken; one
leads to Hell, one leads to Heaven. There is only One Way to Heaven’s gates, but there are many ways to Hell. Sin has stained this world red, with pain, fear, and death only some of the visible consequences, but a man named Jesus buried sin in the depths; so far from us as the east is from the west. And He rose again, showing victory over death and sins. He is the One Way to Heaven’s gates, but if you don’t turn from your sins and run to Him, then you are still held captive to death, and the lie of YOLO is stealing your breath.
Life is precious; don’t waste it. You have been redeemed, the price has been paid, but will you accept it? Jesus died before you came to be, even though He knew you would rebel and refuse to bend your knee. That sad knowledge did not stop Him from carrying the cross; from stumbling over stones and rocks, and having pity upon the least of us. He lay down His life for the lost and broken, and only He could pay the price, because He was sinless and perfect. And by His sacrifice, He displayed how we were worth it, no matter how we cheapen our time and throw away our lives. He hung on the cross for OUR sins, looked upon those who hung Him, and said, “Father, forgive them.” We are the ones who nailed Him there; upon Him all our sins were laid. By all that is just and right, we should have paid the price, but by God’s grace, Jesus paved the way for us to enter into His eternity; He is the key to Heaven. When He breathed His last, the earth trembled at His loss, and the veil that separated man from God was torn from top to bottom. And when He rose, the earth trembled again, not out of fear, but because it was touched by its Creator; like the first touch that breathed life into dust.
In response to such resounding thunder, you can either bow in awe and wonder or be crushed by the sins you love so much. You can be like the earth that recognized its maker or you can spit in the face of your Creator and receive the just rewards of your folly. A free gift has been offered to you, there is nothing you could do to earn it. Jesus said, “Forgive them,” but it is your choice to accept Him or turn your back; to look upon His face and see salvation or spend eternity in separation… in pursuit of death. Without Christ, this isn’t life you’re living; you are just a puppet and sin holds the strings. You think you’re in control, but oh, how little you know. Someday you will know the depths of your sin and your desperate need for Christ, but by then it may be too late to decide. Don’t wait until your sins catch up with you. Turn to Jesus, and let Him crush the sins that were crushing you.
You only live forever, so please, choose today whom you will serve; choose the One Who gave you breath and calls you to life, to rest.
Trust in Jesus.
Even so, come, Lord Jesus. (Revelation 22:20b)
